Problem to Solve
There are said to be 400 million people severe SAS (Sleep Apnea Syndrome) patients worldwide. Compared to the normal individuals, severe SAS patients have seven times higher incidence of accidents such as traffic accidents, and the mortality rate multiplies several times if patients with underlying diseases such as heart diseases also suffer from SAS. Additionally, decreased productivity, such as reduced concentration during the day, results in an economic loss of about three trillion yen per year in Japan alone, according to some statistics. Detailed examinations in the hospital are necessary for treating SAS, but normally, a simple test is performed at home beforehand. However, not so many people take this test due to the several reasons: many people do not realize they are suffering from SAS due to the symptoms occurring during sleep; the test can be cumbersome even though it’s a simple one; it takes time to get the results; and each test costs approximately 45 dollars. In a situation where it is extremely important to conduct proper treatment to severe SAS patients, we believe a demand for a more easy test is extremely high.
