D’isum Inc. (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo) will begin offering a ready-made online failure-prediction service using smartphones from July 2026. No IT skills are required, and anyone can use it easily.

At small and mid-sized factories that still run older machinery, equipment failure can mean missed deadlines and other serious losses. Replacing equipment as a last resort requires large capital investment, so operators naturally want to keep machines running as long as possible. If early signs of failure can be detected and maintenance performed in time, those losses can be avoided.

Many large systems integrators offer “failure prediction” solutions, but most are custom-built. They typically take about a year to introduce and cost a great deal, so only large factories can adopt them today. Many smaller factories have been waiting for a failure-prediction service that is easy to introduce.

D’Insight_FP delivers (1) simple operation with a smartphone and tablet (no special skills), (2) operation in about one week, and (3) a highly competitive fee of about ¥500,000 per year. Smartphones and tablets are provided already configured for the customer. Nothing needs to be set up on site, making the service practical for many small and mid-sized factories nationwide. High-quality smartphones can be purchased for around ¥20,000, so when several machines are monitored (and several phones are needed), pricing can be even more economical.

Place a smartphone near critical points of failure, and deterioration appears on the tablet

A smartphone is placed near high-impact parts of the machine—drives, fans, rotating parts, valves, and so on—and records sound and vibration. Sending raw data to the cloud would drive up network and storage costs, so the phone first processes the data (including frequency conversion), compressing volume by about 1/1,000 before upload.

In the cloud, D’isum’s original visualization AI, D’Insight, maps the data by similarity. Data from the initial (healthy) state cluster together. As deterioration begins, the data drift slightly from that cluster. The gap grows as wear progresses and eventually leads to failure. That gap is expressed as a deterioration index on a chart. The start of deterioration is judged from the slope and amount of the index, and an alert is issued.

A smartphone is an ideal sensor

(1) Sensors for sound, vibration, location, tilt, and more. A wide range of external sensors can also be connected when needed.
(2) On-device processing: a capable CPU and ample memory allow advanced processing, so data can be sent to the cloud without overloading the network.
(3) Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular networks.
(4) Low cost: Android devices are available for around ¥20,000.
(5) Easy to use: reliable and stable, simple to mount (inexpensive holders are widely available), and powered by a single supply.

Standalone sensors can be inexpensive, but processing the data and sending it to the cloud usually requires additional costly equipment.

Available not only in Japan, but anywhere in the world

This service is a form of SaaS and supports Japanese and English, so it can be used anywhere with an internet connection.

In some developing regions, run-to-failure (repair after breakdown) is still common. In advanced economies, preventive maintenance is mainstream today, and predictive maintenance will become the norm. It is then rational for other regions to skip preventive maintenance and move straight to predictive maintenance.

Conventional predictive-maintenance solutions are expensive, and overseas they also impose a heavy burden of system upkeep on the provider. D’Insight_FP, by contrast, delivers failure prediction with only a smartphone and tablet, and customer support can be provided online, so it can be introduced easily and at low cost anywhere in the world. Inquiries have already come from plant operators in Africa.

Also usable for inspection and quality control

As an option, the service can also support factory shipping inspection and quality control. These options will be released in sequence.

(2) Factories overseas—online support makes overseas sites practical as well.
(3) Trial service—many factories will want to try the service first. After covering the initial cost, the service can be used free of charge for one month.
